Queerly Reading Book Club

Queerly Reading is a book club for anyone interested in reading books featuring queer characters and/or authors. Our group is open to everyone 18+ — even if you haven’t completely finished reading the book! — for a casually robust conversation. Our book club meetings will be intellectual (and sometimes downright silly!), but not academic, and always intersectional. Although healthy debate is encouraged, discussion leaders will be responsible for keeping the conversation respectful and on topic.

Book club meetings are held every 2nd Sunday of the month, 6 pm at Cafe Realms.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are books selected?

Books are selected on a quarterly basis (January-March, April-June, July-September, October-December) from recommendations and suggestions from book club attendees.

What kind of books does Queerly Reading read?

Our selections span multiple genres, from fiction to historical, from non-fiction to memoir, from graphic novels to essays, and the occasional podcast. We make a conscious effort to select books exploring sexual orientations, gender identities, and relationships under the LGBTQIA2S+ umbrella. We also explore books written by queer authors.

Why is Queerly Reading designated as an 18+ group? Is there an all-ages book club?

Books are not always read and/or vetted before they are chosen as an upcoming Queerly Reading selection, so we cannot guarantee that books selected for the club have age-appropriate content. Consequently, Queerly Reading has limited attendees to those 18 years of age and older. That said, we would be overjoyed to establish a Queerly Reading Youth Book Club if there’s enough interest to do so. Contact us if you’re interested in helping us start a youth book club!

Do I have to attend every meeting?

Although we love to see attendees regularly, we understand that people are busy, or book selections might not interest everyone. Come to meetings as you can and as they interest you. We’ll always be happy to see you when you join us!

Where can I get updates and announcements for upcoming meetings?

The best place to keep up-to-date with Queerly Reading (and to continue the conversation about queer books between meetings) is through our Queerly Reading Facebook group. Please note that although everyone is welcome to join the Facebook group, it is closed (only members of the group can see the other members of the group and what is posted) to protect the privacy of its members. If your request to join the group was denied (we will likely deny your request if you do not currently live in North Dakota or your account appears to be spam) please contact us.
